This engine was developed in partnership with Jaguar, sharing architecture with the AJ-V8 family used in contemporary Jaguar products. It is a smooth, refined powerplant that fits the personal luxury character of the Thunderbird well. Backing it is a 5-speed automatic transmission that routes power to the rear wheels — a proper rear-wheel-drive layout that the original Thunderbirds used and that Ford specifically carried forward in this revival.
