2007 Mercedes-Benz SL550 — AMG Sport Package, Active Body Control, Power Retractable Hardtop Why This Car Is Special The 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL550 sits at an interesting place in the market right now. New, this car carried a base price well north of $95,000. The R230 generation SL — which ran from model year 2003 through 2012 — represented Mercedes-Benz at its most technically ambitious. The SL550 specifically replaced the SL500 designation starting in 2006, when Mercedes rebranded most of its lineup to reflect actual displacement. The 5.5-liter V8 under the hood produces 382 horsepower and 391 lb-ft of torque, routed through a 7-speed automatic transmission with paddle shifters. That combination was good for a 0-60 time in the mid-four-second range when new — competitive with a lot of cars that were considered outright sports cars at the time. What made the R230 SL unique among roadsters was the Vario-Roof: a three-piece power retractable hardtop that folds into the trunk in about 16 seconds. The system gives you true coupe weather sealing when closed and a genuine open-air experience when down, without the compromises of a soft top. This car includes the wind deflector, which reduces cockpit turbulence significantly at highway speeds and was a commonly ordered accessory that often goes missing over the years. This particular 2007 Mercedes-Benz SL550 carries the AMG Sport Package, which is a meaningful distinction. The AMG Sport Package was not a full AMG conversion — it was a factory option that added AMG-specific exterior bodywork and sport-tuned components while retaining the standard SL550 drivetrain. The Active Body Control suspension — Mercedes' hydraulic active suspension system — is one of the engineering highlights of this platform. It continuously adjusts the hydraulic pressure at each wheel to counteract body roll, dive, and squat. The result is a car that stays flat in corners while still absorbing road imperfections at a level you would expect from a luxury grand tourer. ABC suspension is a known maintenance item on these cars, and a buyer should verify its current function. The presence of this system is also part of what made the R230 SL technically superior to most of its contemporaries.
